Fees & scholarships

Fees and scholarships

The school fees for 2007/08 are £9,693 per annum. These can be paid in three instalments (£3,231) and must be paid in full in advance at the start of each term.

To help you spread the cost of fees, we also offer a monthly direct debit payment scheme.

Where families have more than one child at the school, the school offers a 10% discount on the fees of the eldest child.

We do not charge for school textbooks or workbooks. The only additional charges are for school lunches, coach travel to and from school, music tuition and public examination fees (GCSE, AS and A2).

Several school trips are organised throughout the school year and these may create additional costs to you as parents. We will endeavour to give as much notice as possible in the event of any trip so that parents can spread the cost or save as necessary. The fees for Big Six are contained in the Big Six section of the website.

OpAL Programme

Fees for the OpAL Programme are equivalent to an additional term’s tuition on the normal school fees. This additional charge is to meet the cost of the intensive small-group teaching that OpAL students receive to help them with their Specific Learning Difficulty.

This fee applies to your child’s first three years in school. When your child embarks on his or her GCSE or A Level course, we will reassess the level of individual need. At this point, the school can usually reduce the additional charge to 50% of one term’s fee as the amount of extra help diminishes.

Fee Planning

Many parents use fee-planning schemes to spread the cost of school fees. The school’s finance department has information on several schemes or you can contact the Independent Schools’ Council Information Service (ISCis) for financial advice.

Insurance

Whilst students are attending Wolverhampton Grammar School they are insured, at no charge to parents, against injury which results in death or permanent disability. A school fees refund insurance scheme is also available.

Governors' Academic Scholarships

We are aware that many families are unable to consider sending their children to Wolverhampton Grammar School without some form of financial help.

Our Governors’ Bursaries are means-tested awards which we make to a small number of families on low incomes. The awards vary according to the level of family income but none can be made if your annual family income is over £33,500. We will ask for proof of income prior to any award being made. Governors’ Bursaries are awarded to those children who we think show potential to achieve academically and to make a positive contribution to the school’s extra-curricular, sporting or cultural life. Governors’ Bursaries are only awarded to candidates at 11+ and 13+.

Competition for Governors’ Bursaries is extremely fierce. The school helps as many families as possible but cannot help all those children who have applied for assistance as funds are restricted and only a few places can be funded each year. So your child may do well enough in the test to be offered a place, but not a Bursary. No assistance is available for late applicants. Candidates who satisfy the school’s entry requirements but are not fortunate enough to win a bursary, will be offered a full fee-paying place nonetheless.

Governors' Music Awards

We award one music scholarship to a student coming to the school at 11+ or 13+. The scholarship provides 25% remission of the school fees plus free music tuition on the instrument of your child’s choice. Students who are awarded music scholarships must still pass the school’s entrance test and should either be working towards or have Grade 5 in their chosen instrument. Music scholars are expected to make a significant contribution to musical life whilst they are at the school.

A further music scholarship is offered at 16+
