The Friends of Wolverhampton Grammar School

WHO ARE WE?
We are the equivalent of a Parent Teacher Association with the addition of ex-parents, ex-students and Governors.

WHAT DO WE DO?
We work with the school to arrange fundraising and social events during the school year.

WHY HAVE THE FRIENDS AT AN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL?
Now your child is at Senior School you don’t get to meet on the playground or at the school gates. The Friends events involve you in the school by giving you the opportunity to socialise with parents, children and the staff outside of the normal school situation.
We also raise funds for specific projects which school fees cannot cover, but help enrich the life of the school e.g. new mini bus, theatre seating, boulder wall.

HOW DO I JOIN?
By being a part of the school through your child, you are already a member of The Friends of Wolverhampton Grammar School and will receive details of any events we have planned via the Head’s Newsletter.

CAN I BECOME MORE INVOLVED THAN JUST COMING TO EVENTS?
Yes, you can offer to help in one of many ways without becoming a committee member. Further information will be sent to you at the start of the school year. Dr Trafford, a Governor, a member of staff and several parents form our committee. New members are always welcome. We meet once or twice a term at most, on a Monday evening. It is not an onerous task as many of the events almost run themselves.

IF I JOINED THE COMMITTEE WHAT WOULD BE INVOLVED?
You would need to come to the termly meetings where possible. At the meetings we make sure that everything is in place for the next event. We aren’t expected to get involved in providing food for events as this is done by the school.
The jobs you can volunteer to do for an event are, collecting tickets, serving at the bar, selling raffle tickets on the night.
The committee look at the project suggestions made by the Student Council, the teachers and the school to decide which is the most suitable for us to provide via raising funds.

WHERE IS THE MONEY CURRENTLY BEING SPENT

  • We continue to support the link with Lords Meade College in Uganda.
  • Our main big project is to help fund a new loop and sound system for Big School.
  • One further project is the gradual replacement of the equipment in the fitness room. This will ensure that everyone in the school is able to use the room not just the older pupils. The room will also then be suitable for use in lessons.
