Girls aim for netball glory

January saw Wolverhampton Grammar Schools’ Under 19’s First VII secure its place in the prestigious Sporting Destinations National Schools’ Tournament finals after beating a host of other schools to become West Midlands champions.

This is the team's second major title success of the year after it took the South Staffordshire Under 19’s title earlier this month.

Team coach and head of girls games at Wolverhampton Grammar School (WGS), Heidi Dalzell is justifiably proud of the team’s achievements:

“The entire squad has played superbly throughout the season. There were some tough teams in the regional finals but we competed extremely well and I think the girls came out deserved title winners.

“Being crowned Staffordshire, then West Midlands champions is something the girls and the whole school can be truly proud of.”

The Sporting Destinations National Schools’ Tournament involves schools from all over the UK who compete first at county then at regional level. The finals, which take place in Bournemouth on 15th March will feature the country’s top 16 teams who will all compete for the honour of being crowned national schools champions.

“There will be some excellent teams represented at Bournemouth, as you would expect from a national finals, but the way we are playing I hope we will give a good account of ourselves,” comments team captain Sarah Breakspeare.

“We are all really looking forward to the finals and whatever the outcome I hope that the school and the city can be proud of what we have achieved so far.”
