Gunning for Glory

Wolverhampton Grammar School student Mary Taylor wins a Silver medal in the Sporter 3-Positional Junior Air Rifle team for Great Britain.

Mary’s commitment and dedication to her chosen sport paid off as she was selected for the newly formed 3-positonal Sporter Air Rifle team for Great Britain. Not only did Mary make the Sporter 3-Postional Junior Air Rifle team for Great Britain, but was also selected in the Standing Sporter Junior Air Rifle Team. Competing in these two events Mary managed to win a Silver medal in each.

15 year old Mary, from Tettenhall, Wolverhampton, was first introduced to Air Rifle shooting whilst a member of 4th Wolverhampton (Grammar School) Scout Troop. Mary represented the Troop at the Wolverhampton West District Scout Airgun Championship, where she tasted her first success in the sport.

Mary went on to represent Wolverhampton West District at the West Mercia Scout County Airgun Championships, shooting against Scouts from all over the Black Country (Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton). Here she again tasted success by becoming the County Champion.

She followed this up by representing the County at the National Scout Inter-County Airgun Championships, from which she was selected to join the National Scout Shooting Squad.

Head Dr Bernard Trafford commented, “It’s always a great honour for one of our students to be selected at International level especially with the Olympics and global recognition within striking distance. Mary has achieved great things outside the classroom and this is a wonderful compliment to the hard work and dedication she has shown as she continues her GCSE studies.”
